This is a collection of Medical definitions that cross the boundaries of the healing arts... both east and west.

 

Acupressure
A type of massage used to stimulate the acupuncture points without penetrating the skin with needles. This technique is very useful as rehabilitative physical therapy. It is also useful in acute pain especially headaches and backache.

Abortion
The premature termination of a pregnancy.

Habitual
A women who has miscarried for three or more pregnancies.

Abscess
An accumulation of pus. Heat toxin.

Acrosome reaction
A chemical reaction that happens that allows a sperm to penetrate an ovum

Acupuncture
The Chinese traditional art and science of piercing the skin with sterile stainless steel and sometimes gold and silver needles, to effectively harmonize the bodies energies and assist a person in attaining a high level of wellness. Included in this technique is a system of thermocautery (moxabustion) which is applied at different points in order to stimulate the body with heat.

Acupuncturist
A physician who sees the Body/Mind and Spirit as an integral matrix interacting with nature and uses the techniques peculiar to oriental medicine as his/her healing technique. These techniques include acupuncture, herbs, massage, exercise and meditation.

Acupuncture Point
An acupuncture point is a occilating cavity or energy vortex that can be manipulated with heat cold pressure or puncture. Acupuncture points are located along meridians or channels of energy. Evidence of these channels are located where there are junctions of blood, nerve and lymphatic vessels.

Auricular acupuncture
A technique of needling just the ear to effect a complete medical therapy. The Chinese have used auricular therapy for over 800 years. In France, a western trained neurologist Dr. Paul Nogier has advanced this technique to an art form. His uncompromising diligence and investigative mind has developed a system greatly suited to the allopathic physician.

Body acupuncture
Insertion of disposable stainless steel needles into the torso and limbs along meridians, nerve pathways, and bones.

Hand acupuncture (Koryo Sogi Chim)
A technique of stimulating over 400 acupuncture points located on the hand. Like the microsystem of auricular acupuncture it is a complete medical modality. Traditionally the Chinese have used only about 20 different reflex points. In the 1970’s, Tae Woo Yoo O.M.D., discovered the system of over 400 points. They can be stimulated with very fine gauge needles, magnets, cool light lasers, and moxa. This a very effective therapy when coupled with accurate diagnosis.

Nasal acupuncture
This a technique that uses just points in and around the nose. Incidentally, a needle applied to the end of the nose is a very effective treatment for hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). It sounds painful but for the hypoglycemic patient it isn’t. Also "tweaking" the end of the nose will sober a drunk.

Scalp acupuncture
A technique of acupuncture that uses long needle insertion subcutaneously along the scalp. It is a most impressive technique in the treatment of stroke, paralysis and other motor impaired illnesses.

Acupuncture Licensing
At the present there are twenty seven states that license, certify or register; or require Medical supervision. There are twenty four states where acupuncture is restricted to physicians. In California candidates are allowed to sit for the licensing examination after 2800 hours of coursework and training.

Adhesion
Adhesions are fibrous bands or structures of connective tissue by which parts abnormally adhere. They often can develop as a result of surgery, infection, or inflammation. In oriental medicine they are considered to be stuck or entangled Qi.

Adrenal Glands
These are two small pyramid shaped glands that sit atop the kidneys. They secrete hormones and correspond to Kidney Yang in TCM.

Agglutination of Sperm
The clumping of sperm together. Some research indicates that this is remedied by the taking of Vitamin C.

AID
Artificial insemination using donor sperm.

AIH
Artificial insemination of semen into the uterus through the cervix using the husband‘s sperm.

Amenorrhea
The absence of menstruation. Known causes can be exercise, weight loss, anorexia nervosa and stress.

Amniocentesis
This is a diagnostic technique that is done during pregnancy for prenatal detection of fetal genetic disease. It is performed between the 14 and 16 menstrual weeks, by sampling the amniotic fluid. It takes 2- 4 weeks for a fetal cell culture and thereby a diagnosis to be determined.

Amniotic Fluid
This is the fluid that surrounds and protects the fetus in the womb.

Androgen
These are substances that are secreted by the testes, ovaries and adrenal glands. They promote the development and maturation of male sex characteristics and structures.

Androgyny
When a person has both feminine and masculine characteristics.

Andrologist
A physician specializing in diseases related to the reproductive system in men.

Andrology
The scientific study of the male constitution and of the diseases of the male sex, particularly infertility, spermatogenesis and sexual dysfunction.

Anomaly
A marked deviation of the normal standard, due to a congenital or hereditary defect.

Anorexia Nervosa
A psychophysiologic condition seen in women, characterized by an inability or refusal to eat. It is accompanied by self induced vomiting, emaciation and Amenorrhea. This can cause anovulation and cessation of menses.

Anovulation
The absence of ovulation. The basal body temperature (BBT) measurement helps determine this along with ovulation test kits that rely on measurement of lutenizing hormone (via urine testing) present during ovulation.

Antibody
A substance in the body that attacks foreign bacteria or viruses. Some men and women, due to a number of reasons, produce antibodies against sperm that may be the cause of infertility. There is a very effective Chinese herbal formula to assist in this level of compatibility. However, treatment of this type of infertility problem must involve psychological counseling.

Anti-sperm antibody test (SPA)
This test the reaction between the husband‘s sperm and the wife’s blood serum. It identifies if there is any allergic reaction that may interfere with IVF.

Antigen
A foreign substance that cause a persons immune system to create antibodies against it.

Aphrodesiac
Anything that heightens or stimulates sexual response.

Apgar score
The is a score rating the respiration, muscle tone, reflex irritability, heart rate, and skin color of the newborn.

ART
Assisted reproductive technologies.

Artemesia vulgaris, FL. (Moxa)
A common Chinese herb used to warm acupuncture points. It can be found growing next to poison oak (Rhus tox.) in the western United States, and in many other parts of the world. The dried and crushed leaves when boiled help relieve the itching of skin problems. A small pillow made with this herb stimulates the awareness of ones dreams.

Artificial Insemination
The artificial introduction of semen into the vagina, or uterus (IUI), when there is a male infertility problem. The sperm can be either that of the husband (AIH) or by another male donor (AID). This procedure is simple enough that it can be done by a couple at home with the appropriate equipment and technique.

Aspermia
Failure of emission or formation of semen.

Atrophic vaginitis
Inflammation of the vagina in postmenopausel women which is associated with estrogen deficiency.

Auric field
The electromagnetic energy field which surrounds the body.

Azoospermia
A complete absence of sperm in the man's ejaculate. This condition can often be successfully treated with Traditional Chinese herbal medicine if there isn't a structural cause.

Bach Flower essences
These are homeopathic triturations (tinctures) made from over 37 flowers that effect the healing of the emotional body.

Basal Body Temperature (BBT) chart
A chart used to track the basal body temperature during the menstrual cycle. The temperature is taken under the tongue before arising from bed, and before any activity. This charting is useful in determining the ovulatory cycle so as to take the best opportunity for conception. After ovulation the temperature staying elevated indicates pregnancy. There are small hand held computers that measure and record these readings.

Bartholin‘s Glands
These are vestibular glands adjacent to the vaginal opening that secrete mucus and lubricate during sexual excitation. They are homologous to the Cowper's gland in men.

Bendictin
A drug used to treat morning sickness in pregnant women.

Bicornuate Uterus
A uterus having two branches. It is malformation that is a result of incomplete development before birth.

Blighted Ovum
A fertilized egg that fails to mature after implantation on the wall of the uterus and then spontaneously aborts.

Blood Deficiency
The gynecological manifestations of Blood Deficiency include prolonged menstrual cycle with small quantities of thin light colored flow, post menstrual abdominal pain, infertility, lactation deficiency, uterine bleeding during pregnancy, restlessness of the fetus and amennorehea.

Blood Heat Toxin
The gynecological manifestations of Blood heat can include massive uterine bleeding or incessant dripping of blood from the uterus. The blood is usually thick and crimson colored. The person may also be thirsty and feverish with a tendency toward constipation and dark urine.

Blood Stasis
Blood Stasis includes blood that has gone outside the boundaries of normal function. Blood that moves sluggishly in the blood vessels and congests is considered stagnant blood.

Blood Stagnation
The gynecological manifestations of Blood Stagnation include dysmenorrhea, bleeding with tissue in the menstrual flow with clots, pain is alleviated after the discharge of the clots, abdominal pain aggravated with pressure, and Amenorrhea.

Blood-testis barrier
This is the barrier that separates the sperm from the blood stream.

Breaking the Blood
This terminology is used to describe a method of treatment that involves activating the blood circulation in order to move, dilute and dissolve stagnant blood. Sometimes it is considered as "cracking: the blood.

Breech Birth
This is when the fetus is born with feet or the buttocks presenting first. There are well proven techniques of turning the baby with acupuncture and moxabustion if done at least two months before delivery.

Bromocriptine (Parlodel)
A drug that inhibits the hormonal secretion of prolactin (pituitary hormone). It is used to treat both male and female infertility and to inhibit lactation when a woman prefers not to breast feed. Some side effects which may occur include headaches, dizziness and nausea which all relate to the Liver.

Candida Albicans
A yeast like fungus that exists in the digestional tract and vagina. It is the cause of monilia vaginitis and is treatable with the appropriate anti fungal medications or herbs.

Cannula
This is a hollow instrument used in artificial inseminations (AI or IUI) to introduce the sperm into the uterus. It can also be used to remove material from inside the body.

Capacitation
A process that occurs after ejaculation that transforms the sperm so that it can penetrate and fertilize the ova.

Celibacy
The abstention from sexual activity both physically and mentally. Abstaining from ejaculating for men is a technique sometimes used by boxers to augment their power in the ring.

Cervical cap
This is like a diaphragm that fits over the cervix an thereby acts as a mechanical barrier during intercourse, to sperm trying to penetrate into the uterus.

Cervical Mucus
This is the secretion that surrounds the cervical canal. During ovulation there is a texture change that allows the sperm to swim through the cervical canal and into the uterus. Quantifying this textural change can help a woman determine her ovulatory window. Sometimes the cervical mucus does not thin properly during ovulation, this is considered to be Kidney yin deficiency.

Cervicitis
Inflammation of the cervix. The TCM treatment principle to remedy this problem, is to Clear heat and toxin; vitalize the blood flow; remove the necrotic tissue and promote granulation.

Chancroid
A nonsyphilic ulcer that forms on the genitalia caused by hemophilus ducreyi that is transmitted by direct sexual contact.

Chi Kung (Qi Gong)
An oriental system of movements, breathing exercises and visualizations that are used in conjunction with Chinese medicine to enhance the effectiveness of the healing process. There are over 1000 styles practiced in China today. While some practitioners of Chi Kung claim and can demonstrate almost supernatural powers, for the nonprofessional the purpose emphasizes stress reduction and acts as preventative medicine.

Chi (pronounced Chee and spelled sometimes Qi)
A general term meaning energy. It is typed according to where it is and how it functions.

Chi Stagnation
Chi stagnation is most often experienced as pain and distention. Psycho physical or even geophysical stress can be felt in waves as does the pain of Chi stagnation. The pain may be dull or cramping. Chi stagnation can lead to Blood stagnation. Mental anxiety, emotional and physical stress can effect Chi and Blood and thereby impair the function of the Heart and Liver which in turn can result in gynecological pathology. Gynecological manifestations of Chi stagnation may include the following symptoms: prolonged menstrual cycle with scanty, dark red flow with clots, premenstrual abdominal distention and pain, PMS breast distention, difficult milk excretion.

Chlamydia
A sexually transmitted disease (STD) that may influence a persons fertility or sterility. It can present as a nonspecific urethritis. It is currently the single most widespread STD, and can be passed from an infected mother to her newborn child. It can scar the fallopian tubes and virtually not manifest any symptoms that one would take note.

Chocolate cyst
An enclosed cavity or sac having dark syrupy contents, like chocolate. It sometime occurs in ovarian endometriosis.

Chronic Villi and Chronic-Villus Sampling (CVS)
This is when a biopsy is taken from the placenta at about the end of the second month of pregnancy to test the fetus for genetic abnormalities.

Chromosome
A structure in the nucleus of the cell that contains a linear thread of DNA, which transmits genetic information.

Circumcision
An ancient ritual performed by Abraham on himself when he was over 100 years old to signify the opening of his spiritual heart. Circumcision is traditionally done on the eighth day of life by a moil and for the Hebrew people signifies the covenant cut between God and the people. It is the surgical removal of the prepuce of the penis in the male and in some cultures the clitoris (clitoridotomy) in the female.

Clitoris
Small elongated erectile tissue located above the urethra in women, homologous with the penis in men. Some say that it is the external manifestation of the G spot. Enlargement is seen in association with hermaphroditism.

Clomiphene Citrate (Clomid, Serophene)
A synthetic weak estrogen which is the pharmacological agent of choice for the induction of ovulation. It is usually administered consecutively for 5 days, beginning 3-5 days after the start of menses.

Coitus
Sexual intercourse per vagina between male and female.

Coitus interruptus
Intercourse in which the penis is withdrawn from the vagina before ejaculation.

Coitus obstructus
This is a penile locking method accomplished by pressing on the penile shaft and blocking the urethra so that the ejaculate goes into the Bladder. It is not recommended however for men with compromised urological or prostatic health.

Coitus reservatus
Intercourse in which the man’s ejaculation is suppressed. This is a Taoist technique for storing Kidney essence (Jing).

Coitus a la vache
Intercourse in which a man enters a woman from behind while the woman is in a knee to chest position.

Cold Pathogen
An exogenous factor that invades the body and contracts the tissues and obstructs the flow of Yang energy and Blood. Cold pathogen entering the uterus can cause dysmenorrhea, infertility or even fibroid tumors. Cold is frequently generated by a Deficiency of Yang. Cold pathogen frequently is characterized by clear watery discharge, such as a clear fluid from a runny nose.

Colostrum
The thin, yellow milky fluid secreted by the breast a few days before or after childbirth. It contains important nutrition for the newborn which helps it develop the correct balance of intestinal flora. Bovine colostrum is sometimes given by naturepathic physicians to act as a natural antibiotic.

Colposcopy
Examination of the vagina and cervix by means of a colposcope to determine whether or not there are abnormal cells.

Condyloma
A venereal wart caused by a virus which is found on the external genitals and anus.

Congenital
This refers to a condition that exists before birth, regardless of cause.

Conization
The removal of a cone like piece of tissue from the cervix, this is usually considered a treatment for pre cancerous conditions of the cervix.

Constitutional Acupuncture
A system of diagnosis and treatment that distinguishes hereditary somatotypes. There are eight different constitutional types.

Coombs Test
A laboratory test to detect antibodies.

Conception
Fertilization of the egg by the sperm.

Condom
A sheath or cover worn over the penis during coitus to prevent ejaculate from entering the vagina. It prevents impregnation and spreading of STD’s most of the time.

Condyloma
A venereal wart caused by a virus which is found on the external genitals and anus.

Conization
The removal of a cone like piece of tissue from the cervix, this is usually considered a treatment for pre cancerous conditions.

Congenital
This refers to a condition that exists before birth, regardless of cause.

Constitutional Acupuncture
A system of diagnosis and treatment that distinguishes eight hereditary somatotypes.

Cornua
These are the points where the fallopian tubes join the uterus. The cornua are the "horn like" structure at the top of the uterus.

Cowper’s Glands
A pair of glands embedded in sphincter of the urethra that secrete fluid to assist the flow of sperm through the urethra.

Cryobank
A facility where body tissues (i.e., sperm, eggs, embryos, umbilical cord blood) are frozen and preserved by immersion in liquid nitrogen at -196.5 C.

Cryocautery
Destruction of tissue by freezing.

Cryptorchidism
Undescended testicles.

Culture
The propagation of living cells or microorganisms in a special media conducive of their growth.

Cytomaegalovirus (CMV)
A herpes virus that resembles infectious mononucleosis.

CVS (Chorionic Villous Sampling)
This is a non-invasive prenatal technique used to diagnose fetal genetic disease. CVS is performed in the first trimester of pregnancy between the 8 and 12 menstrual weeks. This provides an earlier diagnosis of a compromised fetus.

Cyst
A cavity or sac that contains liquid or semisolid material.

Cystitis
A bacterial inflammation of the urinary bladder. Hygiene is an important way of treating this recurrent problem successfully.

Cystocele
A protrusion of the urinary bladder through the vaginal wall.

Danazol (Danocrine)
This is a steroid that is used for the treatment of infertility associated with endometriosis. It is usually used when there are no significant adhesions and endometriosis is diagnosed via laparoscopy or observation. It depletes Tian Kwei ( the "heavenly dew" that descends at menarche) and is not without side effects such as weight gain, muscle cramps and decreased breast size.

Dantien (Hara)
A energy plexus located about three fingers below the navel and inside the pelvic cavity. The size of the Dantien may be experienced by forming a triangle with the two hands and laying them flat on the lower abdomen. The touching thumbs locate at the navel and the index fingers join and point downward. The Dantien is a storage area for physical vitality in the body. Martial artists cultivate great strength from focusing on this point (field) during exercise.

DES (Diethylstilbestrol)
Diethylstilbestrol was a synthetic form of estrogen prescribed for millions of women, as a contraceptive, lactation inhibitor, and a way prevent miscarriage. There are a wide range of side effects that manifest in children of these women and effect their menstrual cycles and fertility.

DHEA Sulfate test
This is a blood test that identifies male hormones produced by the adrenal glands. If the hormones are elevated response to medications can be improved by taking a low dose of a steroid.

Disease
It is the response of a persons "vital" energy to either an endogenous or exogenous pathogenic factor.

Dryness Pathogen
This is an exogenous pathogenic factor that exhausts essence (jing) and fluids. Symptoms can include, dry and sore throat, dry throat, dry cough, constipation and decreased urinary output.

Dual Cultivation
This is a Taoist sexual practice of two people gathering energy through sexual intercourse. This is an advanced yogic technique and demands qualified instruction.

Dysmenorrhea
Painful menstruation. Acupuncture, homeopathy, structural adjustment, and herbal decoctions work very well in helping to remedy this problem. Women with dysmenorrhea can take an infusion of ginger and raw sugar, or they can make black soy beans and wood fungus mushroom (mu er) into a gruel. They should refrain from eating raw and cold food.

Dyspareunia
Difficult or painful intercourse.

Ectopic Pregnancy
A pregnancy that implants in the fallopian tube or outside the uterus. Rupture can cause death.

Edema
Edema is the swelling of tissues. A light and easily digestible diet is recommended for patients with edema. Salt, raw, cold and greasy food is not recommended along with fish, shrimp, prawns, lobster, crab and other type of shellfish is also not recommended. Low salt maybe a little salt less soy sauce can be used. One can make a rice soup out of barley, dioscorea yam or adzuki beans. This will help reduce the water retention in the edema.

Eight Brocades
A series of eight stretching exercises that are extremely simple yet powerful and are suited for seniors. More vigorous variations can be used as warm up exercises for martial artists.

Ejaculate
The fluid ejaculated by a man which is composed of semen and prostatic fluid.

Ejaculation
A sudden act of expulsion of semen during which about a teaspoon of sperm and seminal fluid are ejected from the penis.

Ejaculatory incompetence
The inability of a man to ejaculate even though he has been aroused to the state of orgasm.

Ejaculatory inhibition
The difficulty in ejaculation during sexual intercourse.

Eight Entities (see Eight Principles)
According to traditional Chinese medicine there are seven emotions that are the internal causes of disease if they appear in excess. They are connected with the external pathogenic factors. These emotions are joy, anger, melancholy, anxiety, sorrow or grief, fear and fright.

Eight Principles
These are the eight identification patterns that are the foundation of Chinese medical diagnosis. In the late 17th century Dr. Cheng Zhong Ling described for the first time these eight patterns. They are Interior/exterior, Full/Empty, Hot/Cold, Yin/Yang.

Embryo
This is a developing fertilized egg during the first eight weeks of pregnancy.

Endocrine System
An interrelated system of glands that secrete hormones into the blood flow. Included are the pituitary, pineal, thyroid, parathyroid, pancreas, adrenal, paraganglia, and gonads.

Endocrinologist
A physician skilled at the diagnosis and treatment of the glandular (hormonal) system.

Endometriosis
The abnormal growth of uterine tissue outside the uterus. Traditional Chinese medicine is a viable alternative to surgery if the endometriosis is in its preliminary stages. A good way to tell how stagnant the blood is to examine the root of the tongue as this area is reflective of the condition of the pelvic cavity.

Erection
The rigid and engorged state of the penis when aroused.

Female ejaculation
This is an expulsion of fluid from the lesser vestibular glands into the vestibule during orgasm. Sometimes this is as much as a half of cup. This can be a result from a uterine orgasm that results from stimulation of the Grafenberg spot, it may be accompanied by uncontrollable and spontaneous laughter or tears.

Fertilization
This the fusion of the sperm and the egg to form a single cell from which an embryo develops. This usually occurs in the fallopian tube.

Fetal toxin
This is toxin transmitted from the mother to the child inutero such as rashes, carbuncles, abscesses etc..

Fetishism
The sexual fixation on some part of another persons body or object of attire.

Fimbrioplasty
Surgical repair of the fimbria of a damaged or blocked fallopian tube.

Five Centers Facing Heaven
This is a style of Chi Kung that was developed and taught at the White Cloud monastery during the Ming dynasty. It is a technique whereby the practitioner learns to pull energy from the moon to develop and tonify their Yin (receptive) Chi.

Five Element Acupuncture
A system of acupuncture that developed out of a society that modeled there existence around the five seasons. Typically only acupuncture points from the elbow to the fingertips and from the knees to the toe tips are used.

Fertility Workup
A thorough fertility workup/investigation has four important purposes.

1) It attempts to offer an explanation for the couples infertility.

2) It furnishes a basis for a treatment plan to resolve the problem.

3) It formulates a prognosis for the couple so that they can make realistic choices regarding their treatment options.

4) It provides an emotional and spiritual foundation for maintaining psychological well being.

Fertilization
The fusion between an egg and sperm resulting in the development of an embryo.

Fibroadenoma
A benign tumor containing fibrous tissue.

Follicle
A pouch like sac in the ovary where a nurtured egg ripens and is released.

Forgiveness
Giving up the right to hurt someone after they have hurt you.

Frenulum
The fold where the labia posterior and the clitoris merge.

Frigidity
Sexual unresponsiveness and lack of interest with an inability to reach orgasm.

Frottage
Sexual gratification achieved by rubbing against another person when pressed close in a crowd.

Fructose test
A fertility test that checks for fructose sugar in semen.

Fundus
Is a general term for the bottom or base of an organ. The fundus of the uterus is the upper part which is farthest away from the cervix.

Fu Ke
This is Chinese medical terminology for the specialty discipline of gynecology and obstetrics

Galactorrhea
The occurrence of inappropriate lactation sometime due to elevated prolactin levels, a pituitary tumor, or hypothyroidism. Some women have brief episodes of galactorrhea after vigorous sexual activity (breast manipulation), which is due to the elevation of circulating prolactin.

Gamate Intra-Fallopian Transfer (GIFT)

Gardnerella
A bacteria that causes vaginal infections.

Genital warts (Condylomata auminata)
These are sexually transmitted warts that are in the genital area. This is due to the human papilloma virus (HPV).

GIFT (Gamate Intrafallopian transfer)
This is a commonly used fertility enhancing procedure for a couple with unexplained infertility provided that the woman has at least one fallopian tube that is open. The gamate is nurtured inside the fallopian tube which is open.

Gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH)
This is the hormone produced and released by the hypothalamus that controls the production and release of gonadotropins from the pituitary gland.

Gonads
Structures that produce male and female genitals, the testes and ovaries.

Gonorrhea
A bacterial, sexually transmitted disease that can lodge in the body for generations. According to homeopathic medical practitioners, evidence of this constitution is seen in people that get warts.

Grafenberg spot
This is a small button like spot located in the anterior vaginal wall that can cause a heightened state of sexual arousal when manipulated sensitively. According to some this area is where a woman stores the emotional history of her sexuality.

Gynecology
Gynecology is the branch of Medicine that deals primarily with the health care of women as it relates to prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease of the reproductive system. Sun S’su Mo, the most prominent physician/gynecologist in China during the Tang Dynasty (619-906 A.D.) wrote extensively on sexology and gynecology. He was also the inventor of gunpowder.

Gynecomastia
This is a condition in men where there occurs an excessive enlargement of the mammary glands.

Healing Crisis (Hering’s Law of Cure)
This is when the body takes the opportunity to do some cleansing and discharge past symptom patterns that may still be lodged in the body. This type of occurrence is like a retracing of old symptoms. For instance, if a person has had a set of peculiar leg pains after an auto accident and has acupuncture ten years later, he/she may get those same pains during the course of treatment. the reason for this is that the body has to throw out the memory of an old injury to be balanced and in health.

Heart Blood Deficiency
There are the same symptoms as Heart Yin Deficiency except that a persons face is dull and pale rather than flushed.

Heart Qi Deficiency
The clinical manifestations are palpitations, tiredness, shortness of breath on exertion, and unnatural sweating.

Heart Yang Deficiency
The clinical manifestations are the same as Heart Qi Deficiency. This because one cannot have Heart Yang Deficiency without symptoms of Heart Qi Deficiency. With Heart Yang Deficiency the person also feels cold and has cold hands and feet. There maybe a stuffy feeling in the chest due to the stagnancy of Qi.

Heart Yin Deficiency
The clinical manifestations include palpitations, insomnia, poor memory, dream disturbed sleep, and a general feeling of heat with a malar flush.

Hemizona assay
A lab test done to see if there is the ability of the sperm to penetrate a human ova. First the egg is split in half, then one half is tested with the husband’s sperm and the other half is tested with the sperm of a fertile man.

Herpes Virus, type 1
This virus causes cold sores to appear on the lips and in the mouth.

Herpes Virus, type 2
This virus causes herpes genitalis which is considered a sexually transmitted disease.

Hirsutism
This is the presence of hair where it is not commonly found in women. Facial hair growth on the cheeks at the sideburns, on the upper lip and chin. It also appears on the chest or between the breasts, the lower abdomen above the pubis, the inner thighs and hair on the lower back which is on the midline of the back entering between the buttocks. It is associated with high levels of testosterone and polycystic ovary disease (PCO).

Homeopathy
A therapeutic method which applies the law of like curing like. Medicinal substances in infinitesimal doses are used to stimulate one’s vital energy to react immunologically with exogenous and endogenous pathogenic factors.

Hormone
A biochemical messenger of the body that effects change.

Hyperandrogenism
Androgen excess in women that results in signs and symptoms of virilization, hirsutism, and acne.

Hypogalactia
This is the lack of milk, or the inability for milk to come in after childbirth. A diet for women with hypogalactia in China includes pigs feet and carp soup. Also chicken and millet soup is excellent. Raw, cold and spicy food is not recommended.

Hysterotomy
A surgical procedure that removes part or all of the uterus, ovaries and related structures. Frequently this procedure can be prevented with appropriate TCM treatment if the causative factor is isolated and remedied.

Hypothyroidism
A diminished function of the thyroid gland in its secretion of the hormone thyroxin. This may become noticed by symptoms of lethargy, chill phobia, weight gain, thickening of the skin at the elbows. From a TCM point of view this is simple Chi deficiency and can be remedied by the patient eating a warm natured diet and taking perhaps some Chi tonifying herbs.

Infertility
The diminished or absent ability of a couple to achieve a pregnancy after one year of unprotected sexual intercourse or the inability of the woman to carry a pregnancy to live birth.

Infertility Specialist
A gynecologist who has received further experience, education, and training in the diagnosis and treatment of infertility from both a physical and psychological perspective.

Inward Flaming of the Dragon Fire
This relates to the pathogenic changes that happen due to an excess amount of Kidney Fire (Yang) which is a result of a depletion of Kidney Water (Yin). The symptoms associated with this condition include increased sexual libido (sexaholia), premature ejaculation, spermatorrhea, frequent dreams and lumbar pain.

Implantation
The attachment of a fertilized egg to the wall of the uterus. This is said to occur about five days after fertilization.

Impotence
Usually this means erectile dysfunction. The inability of a male to achieve and maintain an erection until ejaculation.

Infertility

In Vitro (In Glass) Fertilization (IVF)
A procedure used for the treatment of blocked fallopian tubes. Eggs are collected and placed with the husband's sperm outside the body in a laboratory dish. After they have fertilized they are implanted in the uterus where they can implant and for a viable pregnancy.

Iron Groin Chi Kung
A Taoist meditation practice known for strengthening and balancing the reproductive system. Some TCM physicians maintain that it works solely on the reproductive mechanism and one’s sexual energy. However, it is also known to lower serum cholesterol, strengthen the thymus, and tonify the immune system. This technique is not widely taught in the west as there are few qualified instructors, even in the orient.

IVF blood panel
These test include Hepatitis B Surface Antigen, AIDS test, and RPR. These tests identify contagious diseases.

Jealous Milk
This is the overabundant production of milk that becomes the object of envy by less productive mothers. This is a very oriental expression.

Jing (see Kidney essence)
The Yang aspect of Kidney Essence relates to transformation, development and reproduction of Energy (Qi), Blood (Xue), and Body Fluids (Jin Ye). The Yin aspect of Jing provides the nutrient components of transformation, growth, development and reproduction.

Jing Chi (Essential Energy)
This is the energy inherited from the mother and father at conception. Generally speaking it is what decides a persons constitutional vitality. It resides in the Kidneys after birth and determines growth and development. The maturation of sperm and ova and the process of conception and pregnancy is a function of this energy. This energy is depleted with excessive sex or masturbation by men or women during the teenage years.

Kallman’s Syndrome
This is a hypogonadotropic syndrome that was initially describes by Kallman. This syndrome effects men by yielding them infertile and unable to ejaculate. Impotence is present and low or absent libido is common.

Kegel exercises
The strengthening of the pubococcygeus muscle through voluntary contraction. In order to isolate the muscle, one merely needs to cut off urination in midstream, hold for a moment and release. This exercise is said to be good for preventing stress incontinence, resolving premature ejaculation and for maintaining prostate health .

Keloid
An enlarged overgrowth of scar tissue due to an excessive amount of collagen.

Kidney
The Kidney in TCM relates to both the Kidney itself and the adrenal glands, the bones, brain and spinal column, ears and hearing, knees and reproductive function. In TCM Kidney imbalance symptoms include: edema, urinary problems, wet dreams in men, and slow muscle movements. (Lai)

Kidney Chi
This is a general term relating to a multifaceted concordance of aspects corresponding to the kidney and its related anatomy and physiology from the perspective of TCM.

Kidney Chi Deficiency
A general term meaning a lack of kidney function. This may not be able to be diagnosed by western medical testing, however it may present as evidenced by certain symptomatology or lack of tonus of a particular radial pulse. There may be symptoms of weakened mental clarity, hair loss, loose teeth, diminished sexual function, abnormal development in children, and fontanels (soft spots on babies' skulls) close slowly.

Kidney Chi Not Firm (consolidated)
The most significant cause of this type of pathology is excessive sexual activity. The clinical manifestations of this syndrome can be frequent nocturnal emissions without dreams, dribbling after urination, weakness of the lumbar area, weak-stream urination, urinary incontinence, premature ejaculation, uterine prolapse, and chronic vaginal discharge. This condition is treatable by reinforcing and stabilizing the Kidney Chi while stopping the lose of Jing.

Kidney Essence (Deficiency) see Jing Chi
Kidney Essence (Jing) helps to generate sperm and ova and is related to the mitochondria, the powerhouse of the cell. Insufficiency of Kidney Essence is usually related to an inherited Kidney weakness. A woman with refined features that is small boned, petite with pale skin may fit into this category. Long term poor diet, an elevated amount of stress (physical or mental), a long term illness, or even an exhaustion of sperm due to excessive masturbation may contribute to a depletion of Kidney Essence. Declines with age.

Kidney Yang Deficiency
Kidney Yang is the root of all Yang energy of the body. It is the exterior manifestation of Kidney Yin. Yin and Yang are coupled together and can manifest together as seen by the similarities of the symptoms. Chronic illnesses always effect the Kidneys as does stress. The Kidneys generally correspond to the emotion of fear. The fright and flight response from fear and the power of courage relate to the negative and positive qualities of the Kidney energy. The power of orgasm manifests through the circulation of Kidney Energy.

Kidney Yin Deficiency
Kidney Yin is the root of all Yin in the body. Kidney Yin deficiency symptomatology goes along with Kidney Essence deficiency. There are several reasons for this type of deficiency. There can be constitutional or genetic deficiencies passed on from the parent to the sibling. However, stress overwork for a period of several years seems to be one of the biggest culprits as does excessive sexual activity during the teenage years. Kidney Yin can be injured by the consumption of too many Kidney Yang tonifying herbs.

Kidney Yin Deficiency, with Empty Fire Blazing
The clinical manifestations of this syndrome include malar flushing, mental restlessness, excessive sexual desire, nocturnal emissions with dreams, and lower back pain.

Lamaze method
This is a way of preparing for childbirth. The couple is educated as to the biological processes and prepared for the birth by practicing breathing and relaxation techniques. This process is assisted by a partner or coach.

Libido
The desire to behave sexually.

Limbic system
This is the part of the brain that influences a persons sex drive. This part of the brain is said to be 300 million years old.

Linea nigra
This is a dark line that appears on the lower abdominal wall from the pubic area up to the navel along the Ren Mai (Conception vessel) in women during puberty. It is frequently indicative of Kidney deficiency (Shen xu).

Liver
The Liver is responsible for the smooth circulation of Qi and Blood in the pelvic cavity. The Liver likes to be open. The Liver stores the Blood and manifests in the nails. According to TCM, it is said that once the Tian Kuei has arrived one must treat the Liver meridian when gynecological symptoms manifest.

Liver Blood Deficiency
Liver-Blood is closely related to the central meridians that run up the front of the body (Ren Mai) and the back (Du Mai). Because of this relationship a lack in the blood supply in these channels can result in scanty periods or even amennorehea. Liver Blood deficiency can be part of a persons condition when their nails are brittle and dry.

Liver Chi Stagnation
Stagnation of Liver Chi and/or Liver Blood can lead to the inability to achieve orgasm, frigidity or lead to an inability to maintain an erection in men. The Liver according to oriental medicine controls the emotions and nervous system, and when healthy, can give a person great creative drive and sexual energy. Therefore, when in a congested or stagnated condition, people frequently experience "out of control" anger and emotions. Irritability, depression, frustration are signs of Liver Qi Stagnation, as the Liver is said to assist us in planning our lives smoothly and wisely. Likewise, someone who is in a job that they don't enjoy, works late hours, took birth control pills for years, and is frustrated about having and raising children, could create a congested Liver. This may also manifest with symptoms of irregular periods, PMS, dark colored blood with small clots, breast pain with distention, worry and frequent sighing or headaches.

Liver fire
A woman is likely to suffer from menstrual headache and profuse menstrual bleeding when Liver fire is present.

Liver/Kidney Yin Deficiency
The Liver governs the muscles and the tendons. The uterus is a muscle and the penis is sometimes called the Original tendon. The production of semen for men and vaginal secretions for women are a function of the Kidney Yin. The Liver stores blood, flowers in the eyes, and nourishes the tendons. This is why in this category there are a lot of indications for ‘water‘ problems, blood problems and eye problems. Since the Liver stores the blood it also governs nourishes the uterus and influences menstruation.

Menarche
This is the first menstrual period, which usually appears between the ages of 9 and 16. In more northern and colder climates menarche tends to start later. If menarche hasn’t started by 16 significant hormonal issues must be considered.

Menstrual pain
Generally menstrual pain that occurs before the period is due to Chi stagnation. Pain during is due to Blood stagnation and pain after the period is due to a deficiency of Blood and Chi.

Meridian
A conduit through which flows the electromagnetic energy (Chi). There are 78 meridians in the body that form a matrix that allows for the energetic relationship of the body and mind.

Ming Men (Gate of Life)
An area between the second and third lumbar vertebrae. In TCM this is a very important point and area as it corresponds to metabolic function and is the "pilot light " for the endocrine system. The Chi of the Triheater originates from Ming Men (GV4).

Minipill
A female oral contraceptive containing a low dosage of progestogen.

Motility of Sperm
The ability of sperm to swim. This is a function of Kidney Yang energy according to TCM.

Moxa
A finely ground velour of Folium Artemesiae vulgarus which is commonly known as mugwort. In the orient it appears yellowish and in California a slight grayish white. It grows next to poison oak (Rhus Toxidenron).

Moxibustion
This is a technique of thermocautery using leaves of the mugwort (Artemisea vulgarus) plant which are rolled into a type of cigar. The moxa is then ignited and held above an acupuncture point so as to stimulate the point with heat. This is a very useful technique in raising sperm count, increasing motility and warming a cold uterus. In the orient it is sometimes burned directly on the skin, however this is not prevalent outside in America.

Muscle Changing Exercises
These exercises are attributed to Bodhidarma, a monk that initiated a major movement of Buddhism in the East. They are isotonic exercises that help develop great physical strength.

Myometrium
The muscular outer layer of the wall of the uterus.

Nei Ching Su Wen (Chin Shir Huang Di)
The Yellow Emperor’s classic on Chinese internal medicine written 250 B.C. by Chinese medical scholars. This classic was a compilation of the medical writings of the previous written medical history. It is presented as a dialogue between a Taoist scholar Qi Po and the Yellow Emperor (Hwang Di). There are physicians still in China today that have this 80 volume book committed to memory.

Nei Guan (P6)
An acupuncture point that is used for nausea and stomach problems. Effectively used in morning sickness along with B6 during the first trimester. The point is located approximately 2 inches above the palm on the inside of the forearm in the center. The name of the point is Inner Gate.

Nine Palaces Microcosmic Orbit
This is a style of Chi Kung that was developed at the White Cloud monastery during the Ming dynasty. It is a technique whereby the practitioner learns to pull energy from the sun to develop and tonify their Yang Chi.

Orchitis
Inflammation of the testes sometimes due to trauma and or mumps.

Orgasm
The climax of sexual intercourse. It is usually signified in the male by ejaculation of semen, and in the female by shuddering contractions of the clitoris or vagina. However, sometimes there is a whole body response that is far beyond the physical experience both for the male and the female. For some it can be a state of euphoria that is said to border the Divine. This experience may last for several days.

Orgasmic dysfunction
The failure to achieve orgasm. Primary orgasmic dysfunction is when a woman has never had an orgasm, and secondary orgasmic dysfunction is when she fails to have an orgasm in certain selective situations.

Oriental Medicine
The art and science of using acupuncture, herbs, massage, exercise and meditation to assist people in attaining a disease and calamity free existence. As a practicing physician of this technique, one is charged with living in harmony with one’s environment and nature.

Ovulation
This is the process by which an ovum ripens and is discharged from an ovarian follicle.

Pancreas
An elongated gland that is located behind the Stomach which has the function of secreting digestive enzymes and insulin. Considered to be Spleen Yang by TCM.

Patent Herb Formulas
These are over the counter medicines usually in pill, tincture or powder form.

Percoll wash technique
This was technique is the use of a one step discontinuous Percoll gradient to separate motile sperm from defective sperm. It also helps separate white blood cells and seminal plasma debris. The motile sperm that have been separated by this technique seem to have greater ability to pass the Hamster egg test (SPA). This technique produces the best swimmers and thereby give a better chance for conception.

Pheromone
A chemical signal emitted by a member of the same species that causes a change in the behavior of another member of the same species. Men have glands on the skin, armpit, penis and scrotum that produce pheromones that can increase an adult woman’s sex drive, especially around the time of ovulation.

Phlegm Pathogen
There are two kinds of phlegm pathogens. There is visible phlegm and invisible phlegm. Visible phlegm is a pathogen that is a product of the respiratory system when out of balance. There is a fluid that is thick, viscous and spat. Invisible phlegm is a pathogen and bi-product of a disease entity. Usually the spleen which can cause different kinds of illnesses, such as, nausea and vomiting, when the stomach is affected. Invisible phlegm can also cause palpitations and clouded thinking, even mania, when the heart is involved. In this situation it is said that phlegm is masking the orifices of the heart. It can obstruct the meridians and alter the free flow of Qi and create tumors, nodules, and lumps.

Pineal Gland
A pine cone shaped gland situated behind the forehead that is of mystic importance.

Placebo
An inactive substance or preparation given to a patient to satisfy the patient’s symbolic need for a drug.

Placenta Previa
This is a condition where the placenta attaches between the fetus and the cervix. It is seen in Spleen Chi Deficient patients.

Postpartum Depression
This is a kind of depression, crying and anxiety that appear after a woman has had a child. In TCM it is due to Blood deficiency and is treatable with herbs and acupuncture. If not treated it can effect the women for years and will be of major significance at menopause.

Polyp
A protruding growth from a mucous membrane such as the cervix or uterus.

POST (Peritoneal Oocyte and Sperm Transfer)
This is a technique of putting sperm and egg into the pelvic cavity via an ultrasound guided vaginal approach.

Premature Ejaculation
According to the Kinsey report men who could not keep their penis in their partners vagina for more than two minutes without having an orgasm were considered as having premature ejaculation. (Sexual Behavior in the Human Male p. 530)

Premature menopause
The cessation of the menses before the age of 35.

Priapism
This is the persistence of penile erection which is accompanied by pain and tenderness that fails to subside despite climax from sexual intercourse or masturbation. It is usually not accompanied by sexual desire. Some physicians consider a persistent erection of over 4 hours to be a urologic emergency. If priapism persists longer than 24 hours it is a catastrophe.

Rape trauma syndrome
A series of emotional and physical reactions in a woman after an attempted or actual rape.

Reiki
A healing technique used to restore balance in the body by activating one’s own natural energy.

Retrograde Ejaculation
This is a condition during orgasm where seminal fluid flows backwards into the bladder instead of being ejaculated out the urethra.

Roaring Fire at the Vital Portal
This is a condition that is due to excessive Yang due to Kidney Yin deficiency and the Yin fluids. The main symptoms are increased libido, frequent penile erection, frequent erotic dreams and insomnia.

Rolfing
A system of deep tissue body massage developed by Ida Rolfe M.D., that releases deeply locked tension which is stored in a persons connective tissue. The technique is quiet vigorous and demands a great report between practitioner and patient.

RU-486
An anti progesterone compound used to induce abortion. As an anti hormone there is a possibility for it to be used in the treatment of cancers. Currently RU-486 is only available in France.

Semen
This is the fluid ejaculated by the male that consists of spermatozoa suspended in seminal plasma.

Semen Analysis
This is a microscopic study of semen used to determine the number, movement (motility), shape (morphology) and size of sperm. Current computer technology allows for extremely accurate quantification of a given sample.

Seminal Emission
Diet for the person that has seminal emissions should be light and nutritious. Food that is pungent is not recommended. Drinking and smoking is not recommended. Chinese yam, dioscorea in a porridge is good. Also pairs are good. Pairs and pair juice for nocturnal emissions.

Sexual Dysfunction
Any psychological or physiological condition that inhibits sexual gratification.

Shiatsu
A style of therapeutic massage from Japan that uses thumb pressure on acupuncture points. It is similar to acupressure. It is very effective and recommended for jet lag.

Shirodkar procedure
This is a procedure where a ring of sutures are stitched around the cervix in order to keep the mother from miscarriage. At time of delivery the "purse-strings" are cut.

Short luteal phase syndrome
When the corpus luteum dies prematurely during the menstrual cycle.

Sperm Washing
A laboratory technique of separating the sperm from seminal fluid. Usually done before artificial insemination to provide a larger more concentrated quantity for the procedure.

Spermatic Cord
The duct system that transports the sperm from the testicle to the urethra for ejaculation.

T-mycoplasma
A sexually transmitted microorganism implicated in infertility and miscarriage.

Tai Chi Nei Kung
This is a technique of internal alchemy that is derived from the Tai Chi Chuan series. It is a vast energy system exists within the body. The movements are few, the technique is simple, the effect greater than Tai Chi Chuan itself.

Tai Chi Chuan (Taijichuan)
This a series of 108 different movements, stylized by the Ming Dynasty that appears like slow motion dancing. It is quite beneficial for one’s health and can be experienced like a moving yoga style exercise. It is also a very effective martial art. As the saying goes, practice Tai Chi every day and you will live to be 99.

Tang Kwei
A Chinese herb Rx. Angelica sininses that builds the blood. Is not recommended to take during menstruation. It is frequently used after childbirth to rebuild the mother and is tasty when cooked with chicken.

Tongue Diagnosis
The examination of the tongue provides the physician with many clues as to the state of ones internal organs. Constitutional, chronic and acute conditions can be diagnosed quickly and efficiently.

Total Truth Method Qi Gong
This is a series of exercise that are associated with the longevity practices of the White Cloud monastery in China. They are very simple yet extremely effective. This set of exercises helps one break through emotional attachments that block the collector of Qi from nature.

Tubal patency
This refers usually to the fallopian tube when they are not obstructed.

Toxic shock syndrome
This is a disease associated with the wearing of highly absorbent type tampons. The symptoms include high fever, a sunburn like rash, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle ache, and a marked drop in blood pressure. Staphylococcus aureus is harbored in the reproductive tract.

Transcervical balloon tuboplasty
The insertion of a small balloon into a blocked fallopian tube to unblock it mechanically.

Transsexual
This is a person who feels that they are trapped in the body of the wrong sex.

Transvestite
A person who derives pleasure and sexual arousal by dressing in the clothes of the opposite sex.

Triheater (San Jiao)
The Triheater is a TCM term that describes the interrelated function of the thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic cavity. Sometimes it is known as the metabolism meridian as it has a regulatory function and presides over all the Chi in the body. It is an ambassador at large.

Triolism
A form of exhibitionism where two people have a third person watch their sexual activity. The third person is considered a voyeur

Uterine
Pertaining to the uterus.

Uterine orgasm
An orgasm that occurs as a result of stimulation of the Grafenberg spot in the vaginal wall.

Vaginismus
Painful and spasmodic contractions of the outer third of the vagina making intercourse painful. This can make penile intromission impossible. It is a condition that is treatable with acupuncture and herbs.

Varicocele
Vericosed scrotal veins which can be a cause of infertility in men.

Virilization
The development of male secondary sex characteristics in a woman to include the growth of facial and body hair, clitoral enlargement, temporal balding, deepening of the voice, decreased breast size, increased muscle mass, loss of female body contours and Amenorrhea.

Wei Chi (Defensive Energy)
This is the Chi that flows along the skin on the exterior of the body. It regulates the body’s defense mechanisms to protect the person from exogenous pathogenic factors. This energy governs the opening and closing of the pores. In western medicine its parallel function is known as the immune system.

Ying Chi (Nutritive Energy)
This is the Chi that moves with the blood and nourishes the internal organs. This is the Chi that is activated when an acupuncture point is needled.

Yuan Chi (Original Energy)
This is the combination of the distilled essence of the mother and the father combined with the child’s on Spirit (Heavenly Energy). These fuse and produce an energy which is the foundation for the child’s physical and psychological structure.

Yohimbe (Coryanthe yohimbe)
An aphrodisiac that stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system.

Zona Pellucida
This is the membrane that surrounds the developing ova until just before implantation onto the endometrim.

Zygote Intra-Fallopian Transfer (ZIFT)
This is a procedure that is similar to IVF where several eggs are removed from the ovaries and reintroduced into the fallopian tube rather than into the uterus as they are in IVF.
